In late August, we went to Cape Lookout.  It’s an enclosed area at the southern end of the outer banks.  You enter from the ocean side and anchor in the “bight” of the Cape.  We went out into the ocean at Beaufort inlet, so it’s a short trip to the Cape.  In total, it’s only about 5 hours from our slip in Oriental.  It is a great place!

Fine Lion loves the Atlantic Ocean, and the trip is easy.  We saw dolphin along the way, but there were several dolphin in the anchorage.  We even had a “marine world” experience seeing the dolphin leaping completely out of the water right near the boat…unbelievable!  We saw wild ponies on the island that is on the other side of the bight.

We saw a very large stingray under the dinghy, and were treated to daily sightings of a huge sea turtle.  The water was great (83 degrees), and so was the swimming.  We stayed three nights, and the last night had a thunderstorm at 2:00 AM.   We knew it was coming, but 60 kts. of wind is still a bit of an eye opener.  The anchor held well, so that was comforting.

We then went to Beaufort for the next night.  It’s a nice waterfront town with lots of restaurants and shopping.  We had a great trip and will certainly return to both spots.
