| The anchorage at Cumberland Island |
We left Charleston on Nov. 6 heading for Fernandina, Florida.
Charleston is a great town. The restaurants are to die for. You can do shopping in the department stores or you
can shop in the market area. In the market area you can find the most incredible baskets. There are men and women
sitting in the market area weaving these beautiful baskets. It was probably a good thing we got out of there; it is
bad for the budget.
Our trip from Charleston to Fernandina,
FL. was uneventful. We were able to sail for 4 hours and then motored the rest of the way.
We fueled the boat in Fernandina and then anchored at Cumberland Island.
It was a nice anchorage except for the bugs. They love me. Cumberland Island is a National Park. The walking
paths have the most interesting Live Oak trees with Spanish moss hanging from them. It has a very nice beach area.
People come over by ferry and stay in cabins or camp out. I would vote cabin myself as I would not want the bugs, lizards
or snakes paying me a visit in the middle of the night.
While
we were anchored at Cumberland Island we were fortunate enough to see a submarine being escorted right by the anchorage.
The security around the submarine is incredible. A vessel can not get with in 500 yards of the submarine or the Coast
Guard boats with guns on the bow will be paying your vessel a little visit. I’ll pass on that kind of visit from
the Coast Guard.
The next morning (Sun. 11/9) Fine
Lion and Sapphire took off for another over night heading to Ft. Pierce, Florida. The weather started out to be very
nice, we were able to sail for a few hours and then the wind was right behind us. We motored the rest of the trip.
Around midnight the wind and waves started to kick up and we did a bit of rocking and rolling. We naturally saw many
Dolphins and were lucky enough to see a few sea turtles. Steve says he saw a sea turtle bigger than the one we saw last
year, the one I described as being the size of a VW Bug. I’m certain those huge turtles would be unable
to get out of the way if they were about to be struck by a boat. They are so mellow and move so slowly.
We parted ways at Ft. Pierce with Sapphire (Mike and Kathy). We know
we will see them again somewhere in the Bahamas so that seems to lighten the disappointment of parting ways. They were
a great buddy boat.
We left Ft. Pierce on Sun 11/9
heading to Lake Worth, West Palm Beach, Florida. We had to go down the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) due to bad weather
on the outside. We really do not like the ICW. There are way too many bridges to slow you down while you
wait for the bridges to open.
We had a nice
surprise when we got to Lake Worth. We received a call from Don and Karen. We met them last year in the Bahamas, they
are aboard Draggin Lady. We had dinner together that night. It was so great to see them. Don is one of the
few people I know that can come close to matching Steve’s quick wit.
The next time you hear from us we will be in the Bahamas. We plan to leave
Lake Worth on Friday 11/14 headed for West End on Grand Bahama Island.
Till later…Kim
