Well, I had to go to the big
party in Farmers Cay. It’s about 7 NM south of Black Point. This was the 22nd
annual event. It was actually a blast. There were Bahamian C-Class Racing Sloop races
and lots of shore side events. The event is headquartered at Ocean Cabin, a bar and restaurant.
The locals get into this one by setting up makeshift stands selling BBQ, conch salad, conch fritters, Chicken, mac
& cheese, beer, wood carvings, t-shirts and various other items.
The festivities on Sat. began around noon. So after getting up, I decided to do some snorkeling.
There were a couple of neat little reefs near the boat. I proceeded to see my first Hogfish, in
fact two nice ones. They are Snappers and are very tasty! Well, just as I was getting
ready to possibly spear them I saw two very large Barracudas right above them. Damn…I didn’t
feel like dealing with them after shooting a Hogfish. I was successful in getting the Barracudas to leave
so I didn’t get a shot at the Hogfish.
The airstrip becomes the “viewing stand” for the races. The crowd has to move off the runway
when a plane lands, however. By Saturday afternoon, the place is a frenzy. Needless
to say, many of the locals have gotten into their cups…or joints. That’s when they hold the
men’s best buns and women’s wet t-shirt contests. It is as you would imagine. Obviously,
“the crowd went wild”.
Since
I was single handing, I anchored a little out of the main anchorage. I left shortly after the contests,
but I could hear that the party went on for quite some time.
The next day was Super Bowl Sunday. Well, even in the Exumas this
is a big event. I went back to Black Point to celebrate at Lorraine’s Café. In
fact, Lorraine had me be the bartender and money collector for the evening. She and her mother made buffalo
wings, conch fritters, chips, and dips for appetizers. The main buffet was ham, turkey, potato salad, veggies,
fish, peas & rice, and various cakes…WOW what a spread! There were about 36 people at her little
café. All but one boat wanted to see the Giants win…so once again “the crowd went wild”.
There are a couple of pics of my “trip”
to the Super Bowl Party. You’ll notice the boat’s speed along with the water temp.
Not bad…and I was towing the dinghy with the outboard on it. Don’t tell Kim, she doesn’t
like me to do that. How does that compare to your trip to a Super Bowl Party?
It was a fun week end. Now I have to rest and do a boat project
or two before Kim gets back. I’m doing one today. I’m thinking about changing
the oil. Just thinking about it today, mind you. Tomorrow I will actually do it…unless
it slides to Wednesday…hey, it’s “island time” do ‘dat ‘ting later, mon…
Steve
PS: It's Wednesday and have CHANGED
THE OIL ! Also, I made some edits on the pictures at the direction of the Admiral.
