| A view of the anchorage from the town |
After all the festivities
of New Years, we decided to stop at Black Point. It’s a “Settlement” on Great Guana Cay.
A Settlement is essentially a Bahamian village. It’s not a tourist location, but rather where
Bahamians live. There are a couple of cafés and bars for the locals and the cruisers that stop.
They are known for their Laundromat.
The focal point for cruisers is Lorraine’s Café. It’s sort of a self
serve bar with Lorraine’s mom cooking and baking bread. There is a small market for the essentials.
It’s only 5 miles south of Staniel Cay so if you need other things you can get them.
The people at Black Point are very friendly to cruisers. We were
here on a Sunday and the church “advertises” on channel 16 to invite everyone to “come as you are”
to their services. You can here the preacher all the way to the anchorage. They
have a beautiful beach for collecting sand dollars at low tide.
While in Black Point, a couple of cruisers collected a bunch of Conch and held a “Conch Fest” on
one of the boats. They did Conch Salad (raw) and Cracked Conch (cooked). It was great…and
lots of fun. There were around 11 cruisers at the party.
One very basic fact that is obvious is the number of Canadians down here. American boats
are often outnumbered by Canadians. I don’t think anyone is back home in Canada minding the store.
I believe you could go up there and just steal the entire country, but they enjoy a good party!
As we move down the coast of Great Guana Cay, we’ll have more to report…so,
stay tuned…
